OBJECTIVES:
This lesson will facilitate the learner to

Knowing:
  • Know the different endangered animals of Pakistan and the reasons for this condition.
  • Think and discuss the impacts of the endangered animals on the environment.

Feeling:

  • Feel the importance of the endangered animals.
  • Understand human behaviours that endanger animals.
  • Feel the importance of caring about the biodiversity of the planet.

Doing:

  • Make posters and slogans to demonstrate the importance of maintaining the biodiversity of the planet.
  • Exploring and discussing the reasons for the destruction of biodiversity.
  • Thinking and performing of roles involved in the preservation and destruction of biodiversity.

Motivation:

The teacher can initiate the lesson by asking the students to define engendered species. It can be a brainstorming session to invite different ideas. Then the teacher can explain the concept if it is required. The teacher can then discuss the reasons for the loss of different species such as habitat loss, over hunting etc

houbarebust.jpg (20653 bytes) After this initial phase the teacher can select an example of Houbara bustard, which is an endangered bird in the Thar area, hunted by the Arab Sheikhs who pay money to the local villagers. This money is utilised for the economic well being of these villagers and building different building such as schools, mosques etc. The increase in hunting of Houbara Bustard in Thar is causing them to become endangered. In this connection the teacher can invite some students to perform a role-play
  • One group of students can represent the Arab Sheikhs who are interested in hunting as their hobby and they have the available resources to hunt animals.
  • The second group will represent the villagers who are in favour of hunting because in this way they can earn money to develop their village by building different buildings etc.
  • The third group can represent the conservative activists who will emphasise to impose ban on excessive hunting, which is causing this specie to become endangered. They will highlight the importance of developing the village but not at the expense of disturbing and harming the natural habitat and the surrounding bio diversity.
  • The last group can become the representatives of the government person from the wild life department. They can highlight their role in imposing the ban and their contribution in the development of the villages in the Thar area.
  • One more group can be added who can represent the Houbara Bustard. They can express their feelings on their excessive hunting and loosing their fellows and family by this act.

This debate can provide the students with the opportunity to understand the issue and its consequences. They can also feel the tension, which is created between the various groups concerned with the over hunting of Houbara bustard and how they express their point of views and in what ways they can think of the solution to this problem.

Conclusion and evaluation:

The teacher can ask the students to make slogans and charts to express their concerns for conserving the bio diversity of the planet. They can prepare slogans and charts for the different endangered animals addressing the concerned people to take initiatives.

Take home Messages:

The students can be motivated to discuss this issue with their parents, siblings, neighbours and extended family. They can bring more information by them and can share it with their colleagues.
